A WAY TO HAPPINESS

Happiness , an attribute of God, is never found in non-intelligence, since it originates in divine Mind, Spirit. Teaching the repudiation of all material sense, Christian Science reveals the spiritual man, created in God's own likeness, as perfect. Therefore, this man must reflect all the attributes which emanate from the parent Mind, God. Each one of us can demonstrate the beauty of love, holiness, and happiness in his daily walk in the degree that he recognizes the supremacy of Spirit over matter.

Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 57): "Happiness is spiritual, born of Truth and Love. It is unselfish; therefore it cannot exist alone, but requires all mankind to share it." Happiness, then, is a spiritual quality which must be shared with one's fellow man. But many of us, failing to realize that happiness comes from Spirit only, confuse its true significance with elation, which falls far short of true joy. One may become elated by the purchase of a new car, but this emotion, engendered by an inanimate, unintelligent object, all too quickly passes away. Attributes of Mind do not fluctuate with either material loss or gain.

"Why," one may ask, "are so many individuals apparently unhappy?" The false belief one entertains of his own identity in relation to that of omnipotent Being causes much unhappiness. His unwillingness to accept the simplicity of spiritual life as set down and lived by Christ Jesus, the master Metaphysician, prevents one from recognizing the parent Mind as ever-present Love. Thus a consciousness filled with hate and resentment is misled and controlled by mortal mind, which presents to us the false pleasures of matter, from which we invariably reap only disappointment and unhappiness. We need not accept mortal mind's deception, however, for man's birthright is not subjection to but dominion over the earth.
