PROTECTING ANIMAL FRIENDS

[Of Special Interest to Children]

Children and animals understand each other because they speak a language which does not need words, the language of love and trust and radiant joy. When a child comes really to know his Father-Mother God as divine Love, as the Life which he and all God's creatures express, then he is able to protect his animal friends as well as himself from harm. Would you like to hear how Jonathan, a young Christian Scientist, found this out for himself?

The story begins when he was quite small. Each Saturday evening he used to ride on the back of his mother's bicycle to a nearby school to see some children's films. Now he loved animals very dearly; so one evening when a nature film was shown with a rather sad story about some fox cubs that had lost their mother, he could not stop feeling very unhappy. His mother knew that only Truth could comfort him.

When he and his mother reached home, they went straight to the Bible. They read what God said would happen when His kingdom is established on earth and His commandments are obeyed. These are the words they read (Isa. 11:6–9): "The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall liedown with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. ... They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea."
