About three years after I married...
About three years after I married I became very ill with a painful organic difficulty and was unable to do my housework. I underwent a long series of treatments, but, like the woman in the Bible (Mark 5:26), "was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse." Three eminent physicians said I would have to have a major operation. It was then I sent for a neighbor, who, I had been told, was a student of Christian Science, and asked her to tell me something about this religion. She brought the textbooks, the Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and read from them parts of that week's Lesson-Sermon. The subject of the lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly was "Adam and Fallen Man." One statement which impressed me was the following (Science and Health, p. 529): "Whence comes a talking, lying serpent to tempt the children of divine Love? The serpent enters into the metaphor only as evil. We have nothing in the animal kingdom which represents the species described,—a talking serpent,—and should rejoice that evil, by whatever figure presented, contradicts itself and has neither origin nor support in Truth and good."
These truths appeared so logical that I decided to ask help from a Christian Science practitioner. Immediately I gained relief from pain and became strong enough to be up part of the time. The complete healing followed, and throughout the thirty years since then there has been no return of the difficulty.
Some years after that healing I began to manifest symptoms of asthma, with which my mother had passed on. I called a Christian Science practitioner for help whenever these attacks came on, because I was very uncomfortable and had to sit up at night in order to breathe.
During one of these attacks I took the Concordances to Mrs. Eddy's writings and looked up references to "sympathy" and "sympathize." As a result of this study I realized that man cannot sympathize with error, but can only be in sympathy with Truth. Through this realization I was healed. Since that time I have been free not only from the asthma, but even from colds, to which I had long been subject.
My daughter and I were both healed of scarlet fever and whooping cough. I have had numerous physical healings, including those of lumbago, influenza, and burns. Problems of grief and discordant human relationships have been solved; lost articles have been restored; and I have had continuous employment and protection from accidents. Truly divine Love has met my every need when the truth has been rightly applied.
I am deeply grateful for all of these healings, and I am especially grateful to have had for many years the privilege of membership in The Mother Church and a branch church and to have served the latter in various offices, including that of First Reader. Class instruction was a most inspiring experience, and the annual association meetings have brought much joy and growth in my study of Christian Science.—(Mrs.) Florence E. Neal, Portland, Oregon.
