In 1923, I was confronted with a business which was about to fail, an associate in the company whose conduct was most unsatisfactory, a home on which payments must be made, and a family that needed to be supported.

My wife, who had had some remarkable healings through Christian Science, recommended that I see a practitioner, but I did not do so. However, I accepted her advice to read for the first time in my experience the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. For five evenings I read the chapter on Prayer. On the fifth night it dawned on me that, whereas I had always thought one needed to beg God for something, Christian Science makes it clear that one needs to acknowledge man's present perfection and to thank God for His goodness. I saw that the desire to solve my problem was a righteous desire, or prayer, and that it would be answered.

Shortly afterward I decided that I would go to a practitioner. The practitioner's earnest and effectual prayer resulted in a satisfactory solution to my problems, and as Christian Science was further applied I found myself, like Job, twice as well off as I had ever been. Simultaneously I was healed of an upset stomach and constipation, which I had had from my earliest years. Soon I became a member of The Mother Church and of a branch church, where I have served in various capacities, and in time I had class instruction.
