RADIO PROGRAM No. 72 - How a Change in Thinking Healed Tuberculosis
On this program Mrs. Mayme Louise Meier of Louisville, Kentucky, told of her own experience, as follows:
Christian Science saved my life over fifteen years ago. When I was five years old, my father passed on with tuberculosis. Later two sisters passed on with the same disease. I too began to suffer from this trouble and was treated by two prominent physicians. Despite their best efforts, I steadily grew worse until I was flat on my back in great agony and pain, and I was given only a short time to live.
I was given a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, by a neighbor who had been healed through Christian Science. I read this book in a desperate search for health. But I did not really understand anything that I read. It seemed to me the queerest book I had ever read. But finally I realized that Christian Science was my last resort. As I thought about this, I wondered if Christian Science really healed, or if its followers just thought it did. At this point the way was so dark in my life that I decided that if Christian Science did not heal me, at least I would read Science and Health to find out a little something about God before I passed on. I seemed so completely lost and God seemed so far away. I also asked a Christian Science practitioner for treatment.
At this point a wonderful thing happened. The meaning of the book stood out so clearly and gave me an understanding of my true selfhood as a child of God and of the allness and goodness of God. The things I had read before, and even memorized, and that had meant nothing, now began to be actually alive to me. I felt for days as if I were walking on air. I was so happy and free; and I knew I was healed. I wanted to read the book day and night. The pain I had was relieved immediately. I began to walk into the dining room for meals and out into the yard and garden. I gained strength so rapidly that in a few weeks I was leading an active, normal life. This healing seemed miraculous to our neighbors and friends who knew nothing of Christian Science, since we were not living near a Christian Science church. Later it was necessary to have a medical examination in connection with a business transaction, and no trace of the former difficulty was found. This healing has been permanent.
The commentary was as follows:
Thank you very much, Mrs. Meier. I'm sure we all can understand your gratitude for this healing and your joy in learning more of God's love. Some of these points will be brought out later in Kenny Baker's solo. Friends, this same unfailing power of divine Love is always at hand to heal sickness, wipe away sorrow, and uplift character.
In many ways our guest's first contact with Christian Science was typical. Like many others, she tried it only as a last resort. When she first read its textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, she did not grasp its meaning. You see, she was looking at it from the standpoint of the prevailing human convictions that God is remote and mysterious, and that man is a frail and suffering mortal. Her thought was filled with the picture of herself as a material being, doomed by disease. Under these circumstances she understood little of what she was reading. But then in her desperation she decided to read Science and Health again to gain a better understanding of God.
This time her settled convictions must have been stirred to their depths, because her thought underwent a complete change of base. She abandoned the theory that man is just a physical organism and gained the understanding that he is entirely spiritual, the beloved idea of a perfect God, who is divine Mind. She awakened to God's goodness, His all-power. His ever-present love for man. So thorough was this mental change that her entire experience was transformed, and soon the bodily condition was healed.
Even though Science and Health sometimes seems strange at first, it eventually brings to those who study it with an open mind an illumination of thought that is almost indescribable. It runs counter to material convictions, but it brings spiritual awakening. This change of thinking was referred to by St. Paul when he said, "Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."
Now in line with these words, friends, physical healing and the solving of other problems in Christian Science demand that we turn from material views and understand life spiritually. This requires much more than merely passively waiting or just asking God to help us. It calls for systematic, scientific prayer, by which we can uncover and eliminate such destructive qualities as fear, resentment, self-will, and the false conviction that laws of disease have power over God's law of harmony. These harmful qualities are destroyed by accepting into our consciousness the life-giving, health-giving ideas that come to us from God. Frankly, sometimes this means completely changing our point of view, and sometimes this takes time. But if the rules of Christian Science are followed, success is sure.
We must make persistent effort to rouse ourselves from fearful, apathetic, sickly thoughts. We can do this by turning our thinking to what the Bible and the Christian Science textbook teach about the goodness and allness of God and the perfection of man in His likeness. We do it by holding steadfastly in thought that God is unfailing divine Life and that He is the source of man's true strength, substance, and vitality.
The wonderful thing about it, friends, is that anyone can use God's power by this means. Each day you and I have countless opportunities to exchange weak, negative, unkind, sickly thoughts for the strong, positive, loving, healthful ideas which come from God.
The way in which our guest was healed—in fact the method by which all Christian Science healing is done—is indicated in these words from Science and Health (p. 4): "Simply asking that we may love God will never make us love Him; but the longing to be better and holier, expressed in daily watchfulness and in striving to assimilate more of the divine character, will mould and fashion us anew, until we awake in His likeness."
The musical selection on the program was Hymn No. 52 from the Christian Science Hymnal.
Happy is he ... whose hope is in the Lord his God: which made heaven, and earth, the sea, and all that therein is: which keepeth truth for ever: which executeth judgment for the oppressed: which giveth food to the hungry. The Lord looseth the prisoners: the Lord openeth the eyes of the blind: the Lord raiseth them that are bowed down: the Lord loveth the righteous.—Psalm 146:5–8.
