THE GOLDEN RULE IN BUSINESS

[Original article in German]

In the business world the struggle for existence sometimes makes harmonious co-operation between business concerns and between employer and employee difficult. Human reason prolongs the inharmony when it argues that without a certain amount of selfishness a business cannot prosper. A completely clear view of this question can only be found if one ventures to apply the Golden Rule in his own business: "Whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them" (Matt. 7:12). He will then see that the result is satisfying and that the Christian way is better for all concerned.

Often in daily life we have found that the nature of a leading personality seems to be reflected in his followers. We may have observed, for instance, that a businessman primarily concerned with his own advantage, expressing little sympathy for those under him, and inconsiderate in his dealings with others, arouses dislike, envy, and distrust. In such an atmosphere harmonious co-operation does not thrive. Whereas, when a businessman has shown kindliness, patience, and charity toward others, harmony prevails and all co-operate to make the business successful.

Christian Science is particularly helpful in bringing about amicable relationships with our fellow men. It shows us how to do this through spiritualized thinking based on the harmony of divine Principle, the one infinite Mind.
