GOD'S LAW OF PROGRESS

Progress is natural to mankind because it accords with the divine fact of the perpetual unfoldment of good. Christian Science reveals the expansion of thought going on eternally in real being as God, infinite Mind, unfolds the endless glory of reality. And the fact that good is perpetually unfolding constitutes the law of progress. Nothing can stop the action of this law, nothing can delay it. But human beings need to grasp and demonstrate the fact of progress as law if they would bring it into their present experience and be governed by it.

Perhaps one believes that he is at a standstill spiritually. Perhaps some sickness or other human discord is not yielding to the healing power of Christian Science. He can always turn to God's law of progress and prove its presence and action. He can effectively deny the belief in an unprogressive life. He can know himself as actually Mind's idea, through which the good that is God is perpetually manifested.

Mary Baker Eddy links progress with the demonstration of spiritual truths. She writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 233): "Every day makes its demands upon us for higher proofs rather than professions of Christian power. These proofs consist solely in the destruction of sin, sickness, and death by the power of Spirit, as Jesus destroyed them. This is an element of progress, and progress is the law of God, whose law demands of us only what we can certainly fulfil." Progress is, first of all, action. The demands for proofs of spiritual power require action, and those who utilize Christian Science intelligently and persistently, demonstrating each step of the way into heaven—the consciousness of the real—are certain to be progressive and to achieve much. But if little effort to bring Truth to bear upon error is made, progress cannot be expected.
