Sir Charles Napier, 1782-1853

[Mentioned in Science and Health, p. 378]

Charles James Napier's service to England exemplified his family's motto, "Ready, Aye Ready."

The first part of his military career included active participation with the English forces in Spain in the war with France and command of a regiment in Bermuda. Probably the happiest years in his life were spent as Inspecting Field Officer in the Ionian Isles and Military Resident in Cephalonia, where his administrative genius came to light.

When the Corn Laws and the invention of power looms and of the steam engine had disrupted industrial life and made the people in northern England desperate, Napier was put in command there. Fully in sympathy with the people's cause, he was able to guide them to press their reform measures constitutionally, without bloodshed.
