CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP

More than nineteen hundred years ago Christ Jesus went about his healing mission, teaching the truth of being, healing every receptive thought which came to him, and expressing a humility and love which blessed all. Jesus set forth the standards for discipleship when he made the following statements (John 14:12): "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also," and (Mark 16: 17, 18), "These signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." Here are the criteria by which one can judge whether he is following Christ Jesus' example. To heal is the final test of discipleship.

Jesus overcame all the beliefs of mortal mind, destroying every type of error with the truth. This was in accordance with his statement of his divine purpose (John 18: 37), "To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth." In the Preface to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. viii), "The question, What is Truth, is answered by demonstration,—by healing both disease and sin."

We are true disciples of our Master—yes, Christian Scientists —in the degree that we spiritually understand his teachings and prove this understanding in daily life by healing the sick and sinning and overcoming every phase of erroneous mortal belief which confronts us. We should love to be thus about our Father's business, proving our discipleship by demonstrating our understanding, glorifying God and blessing all.
