THE PRESENCE OF CHRIST IS DEMONSTRABLE

How can one be assured that the Christ is present today? By proving through demonstration in daily experience the foundational facts of Christian Science, the Science of the Christ. It was Christ Jesus' unselfed purpose to prove for mankind that the Christ is present and available for all to understand and demonstrate. He said (John 14:12), "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also." He also said (John 14:26), "The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you."

Mary Baker Eddy writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 55): "In the words of St. John: 'He shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.' This Comforter I understand to be Divine Science." Jesus was our Way-shower. He showed us how to meet and heal every human problem. He acknowledged the perfect man, in God's image and likeness. He understood the fact of man's continuous perfection so clearly that he healed the sick. What he understood of the truth was the reality to him wherever he went. Wherever he was, needed correction took place, as when the storm was calmed and Jairus' daughter was restored to life.

The Master's chief concern was not so much with what others were thinking about a situation, as with what he knew to be true of God's creation. He dispelled the erroneous condition each time by replacing false thought with the true facts of being. He demonstrated that the understanding of these true facts brings an effective solution in each instance. Jesus knew that the ability to express the healing power of the Christ was God-bestowed—not given to him alone, but available to each and all.

God and His Christ are inseparable and ever present. God, the all-sustaining Principle, is One, indivisible, whole; He maintains the perfection of all, encompassing the universe and man. He constitutes all the law and activity there is, for being all cause He also includes all effect. There cannot be cause without effect. Mind without manifestation, God without Christ. Through Christian Science, the understanding of these spiritual facts demonstrates the presence of Christ in human experience.

Jesus came to show us the way of Life. Through Christ he demonstrated man's unity with and inseparability from the one Father-Mother God. Our Leader writes (Science and Health, p. 98): "Beyond the frail premises of human beliefs, above the loosening grasp of creeds, the demonstration of Christian Mind-healing stands a revealed and practical Science. It is imperious throughout all ages as Christ's revelation of Truth, of Life, and of Love, which remains inviolate for every man to understand and to practise." It need not be difficult to understand and demonstrate the Christ. The Christ comes to us right where we are. It is practical. Christ speaks to us in ways we can understand. It is profound yet simple. Every unselfed thought or deed is activated by the Christ in our consciousness. The Word of God declared and understood and the manifestation of the Word in human experience evidence the presence of the Christ.

What could be of greater comfort to a human mother than to know that she has an understanding of the presence of the Christ, Truth, available to heal her child whenever evil would claim presence. A Christian Scientist, upon retiring one night, had no sooner lain down than she heard a faint cry from her year-old son. He had appeared to be resting comfortably just a few minutes before. The mother went immediately to his bedside. She found him in a severe convulsion. Momentarily succumbing to great fear, she called to others in the house and asked them what could be done humanly. One who had been a trained medical nurse for years answered: "Nothing. May God help him!"

This verdict aroused the mother immediately to the realization that of course God could help him. She began declaring the truth aloud— the presence of the one Mind, the ever-present Father-Mother, caring for His child. With this declaration she denied the belief of the presence of another power and acknowledged the fact that only God's law was in operation. She knew, through the teachings of Christian Science, that this truth, understood, brings effective healing. In a moment the nurse looked up and said, "He is all right now." The child relaxed and was perfectly free.

When this mother stopped being concerned over what others thought should be done humanly, or what mortal mind would say about the situation, and knew only what was true in God's sight, the healing took place. The false beliefs were replaced by the true facts of being. With this mental change, brought about by the understanding of the truth of God's presence and power, the erroneous condition was healed. Here was evidence of the demonstrable Christ, the foundation upon which the Christ-healing is built.

The Word of God is seen in the spiritual truths found in the Bible. They are divine demands. The very word "demand" means among other things "to require to appear." And the Word of God indeed demands appearance or manifestation of itself. Since God and His creation are wholly good, as the Bible and Christian Science reveal, there is no room for another version of the creator or of creation. Christ, Truth, being true, it heals all claims of error, no matter in what guise evil may claim to appear. A mistake is never true but always an error. Where the adherents of material medicine may say we can do no more, the Christ is ever present to heal. Where mortal mind would say there is misunderstanding and nothing can change it, acknowledgment and understanding of the presence of Christ bring unity. In the same manner, lack may be replaced with abundance, sorrow with happiness, and so on.

What a joy to have daily available the same healing presence with which Jesus met his everyday problems. Christ, the Comforter, comes to all. God is no respecter of persons. Everyone who is seeking to know more of his heavenly Father learns that he has the ability to demonstrate the presence of the Christ. This spiritual right knowing is a joyous activity. In proportion to our understanding of God's oneness, and man's inseparability from Him, we find the spirit of the healing Christ present and demonstrable.
