THE HEALING POWER OF GOD

It is significant that discovery and invention have invariably stemmed from mental and spiritual awakening, as if some angel had troubled the stagnant waters of human thought with a new inrush of beneficent ideas. This was what happened about five hundred Years ago when the Renaissance, or the New Learning, swept over Europe, quickening men's minds. One effect of this liberation of thought was the Protestant Reformation, which made possible the unlocking of the Bible's treasures of grace and spiritual power. Expanding scientific knowledge turned the wheels of industry and transport, while new concepts of Deity inclined human hearts to God and His power of salvation for the world. As Christ Jesus illustrated in opening the prison doors of sickness, sin, and death, and setting the captives free, Christianity holds the key to the invincible healing and regenerating power of God.

Our Master, by his consummate example and authoritative, inspired teaching, endued his disciples with power to heal and sent them forth to demonstrate to the world its efficacy. Nobly was the command obeyed after the promised descent of the Holy Ghost at Pentecost, as witness the stirring events recorded in Acts. Their gospel was a gospel of God's power, which enabled them "to tread on serpents," to destroy the false belief that evil can harm, and also to exercise His dominion "over all the power of the enemy" (Luke 10:19).

Of the highest significance today is the restoration through Christian Science of this ministry of divine healing as an essential element in working out full salvation for both ourselves and the whole world. The spiritual power for the task is ever at hand in the omnipotence and omnipresence of divine Love, the only cause and creator. Mary Baker Eddy launched her movement and established her Church on no other basis. In "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" she writes (p. 158), "We live in an age of Love's divine adventure to be All-in-all." It is our duty and privilege as Christian Scientists to join in this adventure daily and hourly and submit willingly to its discipline. This means abiding daily in the consciousness of God's infinitely good power to the exclusion of all sense of evil. It is to be single-minded, seeing only infinite Truth without any possible opposite and opposing error.
