Some time ago I read a testimony...

Some time ago I read a testimony in The Christian Science Journal telling of the overcoming of extreme fear of enclosed and underground places. My thought went out in gratitude to God and to the testifier as I read that testimony, for I am one who can realize what it means to be free from that fear. I was afraid of traveling on the London tube railways or of going on the top of a double-decker bus. Through the study of the Bible and the writings of our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, I am quite free. The healing was so complete that for some years now I have traveled alone on the tube railways and on the top of double-decker buses with perfect ease. Until I read that testimony I had quite forgotten that I had ever suffered from the fear of them.

One morning I was injured in an accident. I immediately started to repeat "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 468). After a little while I was able to get up, but felt a pain in my back and in one of my feet. It was very necessary for me to be at my work that day; so I reversed the thought that I would not be able to go, recalling Mrs. Eddy's words (ibid., p. 385), "Whatever it is your duty to do, you can do without harm to yourself." I managed to get to work and to stand all day, although with great difficulty. That night I had little sleep because of the pain. The next morning, which was Sunday, these words from Science and Health came to me (p. 14): "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,—neither in nor of matter, —and the body will then utter no complaints." Immediately my thought was lifted away from the body, and I was free from pain.

Although I am very grateful for the physical healing, I am more grateful that I experienced a moment of spiritual consciousness. Mrs. Eddy tells us on page 598 of Science and Health, "One moment of divine consciousness, or the spiritual understanding of Life and Love, is a foretaste of eternity." My gratitude goes out to The Christian Science Board of Directors, who stand so faithfully by our great Cause, and to all the workers in the Christian Science movement throughout the world.—(Miss) Florrie Williams, Wrexham, Denbighshire, North Wales.
