THE PRECIOUS OIL

Matthew 25:1-13

Ten virgins waited eagerly the hour
The bridegroom should appear, arrayed in power.
And five were foolish; though their lamps were trimmed,
Their hearts were empty, inspiration dimmed.
Postponement dulled their purpose and concern
To buy the precious oil their lamps must burn.

But five had oil enough, each for her needs;
The price was charity and gentle deeds.
How wise they were! They knew they could not lend
Their consecrated living to a friend,
Although their burning lamps still light the way.
Each vessel must be filled, and every day
Must be a prayer brimming with Love and Truth,
Exemplifying words, with glowing proof.
For now he comes! And heavenly light within
Reveals our readiness to sup with him.
