THE CALL OF THE CHRIST

The human Jesus companioned with mortals for only a few brief years, but the eternal Christ exists forever as the divine idea of God, calling mankind to awaken from the fleshly dream and to realize man's God-given heritage of freedom, dominion, and power. The Bible abounds in instances of how spiritually-minded individuals, in obeying this call of the Christ, have been led out of materialism into wider spheres of activity and service, into higher conceptions of life and being.

Mary Baker Eddy writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 332): "Christ is the true idea voicing good, the divine message from God to men speaking to the human consciousness. The Christ is incorporeal, spiritual,— yea, the divine image and likeness, dispelling the illusions of the senses; the Way, the Truth, and the Life, healing the sick and casting out evils, destroying sin, disease, and death."

Moses responded to the call of the Christ to lead the children of Israel out of bondage, and through his obedience a whole nation was set free. Centuries later two simple fishermen, Simon and Andrew by name, heard this call through Jesus while they were about their daily work. We read in the Gospel of Mark (1:17, 18): "Jesus said unto them. Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men. And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him." They heard the call of the Christ, and their response was immediate. Henceforth their work was of a higher order. They were "to become fishers of men" and draw others to the Christ through witnessing to the regenerating and healing power of Truth.
