DISCOVERING THE SPIRITUAL FACT

"If You wish to know the spiritual fact, you can discover it by reversing the material fable, be the fable pro or con,—be it in accord with your preconceptions or utterly contrary to them." These words of Mary Baker Eddy's, from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 129), set forth a comprehensive rule for everyone who strives for more spirituality. Surely "to know the spiritual fact" is to be conscious of God and His good creation, and our Leader's rule encourages each one to make his own successful discovery.

Christ Jesus reversed every material fable of power or substance apart from God. He exchanged the evidences of sin, sickness, and death for the real, harmonious facts of man's being. Those who follow him naturally strive to do the same. It is in his effort to follow Jesus that a student finds the significance of the Master's patient and loving instruction (John 8:31, 32), "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

The freedom which results from knowing the truth is the effect of reversing material fables. When new in the study of Christian Science, the writer, because of his enthusiastic emphasis upon the promise of freedom, occasionally overlooked the requirement set forth by Jesus to continue in his word. But when one turns more to the mandate than to the promise, he invariably is rewarded.
