ABIDING IN GOD

In the definition of God on page 587 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy gives to the world such a complete, satisfying concept of Him that all who study it desire to understand Him better, walk more closely with Him, and be obedient to His laws. It reads: "God. The great I am; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence."

Studying the synonyms for God given in this definition and realizing, as Christian Science teaches, that man is the full and complete reflection of Him, gives the foundational truths for working out each and every problem. It enables us to understand how to put into practical use the beautiful promises of the Bible which we have long read and desired to make our own.

The Bible is replete with admonitions for us to utilize in bringing health and harmony into our daily lives. A very bountiful promise is given in the book of John where we read (15:7), "If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you." The first part of the promise requires that we abide in God. To abide is to dwell or continue in one place. To abide in God, then, is to maintain a consciousness of His presence, power, and perfection to the exclusion of distracting, false, material suggestions.
