SPIRIT IS THE SOURCE OF STRENGTH

The power of Spirit is present here and now to dispel weakness and empower consciousness through the ever-present and compassionate Christ. Matter is not the source of strength. Power is expressed by divine Mind and always remains in Mind. Therefore in proportion to our understanding of divine Mind we can exercise spiritual power and enjoy in human experience mental and bodily strength. "The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us," said the apostle (John 1:14). The divine power of the Word restores strength, thus causing in human experience the coincidence of the human with the divine.

How do we retain strength? Not by merely declaring, "I am strong, I am strong; God made me so," but by understanding the strength of Truth and Love and living in obedience to the divine commandments. Mary Baker Eddy writes in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 183): "Obedience to Truth gives man power and strength. Submission to error super-induces loss of power." Obedience to God is therefore the basis of strength. The remedy for human weakness—mental, moral, or physical—is to be found in an understanding of God, the omnipotent and ever-present Mind.

"Where then," one may ask, "can I learn of God and His laws that I may obey them and regain my strength?" The great and basic commandments of God are stated in the Bible and explained in the Christian Science textbook. A study of these books will reveal the nature of God's commandments and their application in human affairs
