Fuller Obedience to Our Church Manual

Cincinnati, Ohio

The establishment of a Christian Science Reading Room in the locality of our church edifice, one which would be located in ground-floor premises, was brought up in many business meetings over the years. Our motive was to conform more fully to our Leader's provisions for branch church Reading Rooms as set forth in Article XXI, Section 1, of the Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy. The proposal was talked down at each membership meeting, as many members felt that the church was fulfilling the requirements of this By-Law by uniting with another branch church in the support of a downtown Reading Room.

On June 29, 1951, the following motion was made: "That a Reading Room fund be established, and that a committee be appointed to seek a suitable location in the vicinity of the church." The opposition of the past was gone. The motion was carried. The Reading Room fund was established immediately and in November a Reading Room committee was appointed. Taking into consideration all of the facts, the needs of the community, the church resources, and so forth, the committee began earnest and prayerful metaphysical work. Various locations were proposed and investigated from time to time. Each was rejected, as it did not measure up to our requirements.
