The blessings gained through...

The blessings gained through Christian Science, when its truths are uttered with authority, provide a continuing source of inspiration to me. It is with gratitude for the beneficent, healing power of Truth that I relate this experience.

I arrived home one evening to find my wife suffering from symptoms of influenza. Together we began handling the condition mentally, striving to purify our concept of man. We sought to eradicate an illusory concept of man as material, as capable of harboring any fleshly suggestion. The truths of Christian Science were employed to rid our thought of the belief that man is a manifestation of materiality. We then sought to fill our consciousness with the concept of man as idea, God's compound idea. And one of the ideas, we knew, that make up this perfect compound idea is that of complete and enduring wholeness, of health. We knew this idea to be spiritual, untainted by susceptibility to evil, to discomfort, to deterioration, to heat or cold, or to any lack of right action.

My wife dozed off. It then fell to me to carry on the right thinking that brings healing in Christian Science. I turned to page 475 of Science and Health, where Mrs. Eddy, in her wonderful definition of man, says, "Man is not matter; he is not made up of brain, blood, bones, and other material elements." And she continues, "Man is idea, the image, of Love." It occurred to me what a pure thought this is: man is the idea of Love.
