Signs of the Times

A good deal of emphasis is being laid on the need of giving more time to the religious education of children. This is needed beyond doubt. Yet we must beware of regarding religion merely as a subject, like arithmetic or geography, only requiring time for its mastery. True, we must know what it is and how to use it; still it is more than the cogwheel of an intricate machine. It is rather the spring of the watch—the ideal, the motive, the spirit which keeps life going....
Jesus taught that the spring of the highest life is love, love to God and man. Whether it takes much time or little, we must be sure that the spring is wound up and the watch going. It is life's inspiration and regulator.
