NEARER THEE

Is God to us a friend close by? Is He a pillar of strength, to whom we confidently turn for direction and guidance? Or is He a faraway God, whose identity or presence is of little or no comfort, perhaps even something dreaded as an omen of impending doom?

Christian Science proved in daily living not only will bring one nearer to God, but will reveal a closeness which is beyond all human relationship, even the truth implied in the comforting words: "Am I a God at hand, saith the Lord, and not a God afar off? Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the Lord. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the Lord" (Jer. 23:23, 24). One whose concept of God is based upon an understanding of Him as ever present can never feel alone or comfortless. He knows that wherever he goes the power that created and gave order to the universe is sustaining and directing him. Man is the dearly beloved of his Father-Mother God, whose loving ever-presence encircles him. It is impossible for him to stray beyond the border of God's law, for God is infinite. All, These are divinely established facts, but they become practical to you and to me only as we recognize and demonstrate their availability.

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 209), "Spiritual sense is a conscious, constant capacity to understand God." An understanding of God as Life, Truth, Love, Mind, Soul, Spirit, Principle, confirms and makes practical the words of Paul (Acts 17:28), "In him we live, and move, and have our being: as certain also of your own poets have said. For we are also his offspring." Since, in reality, we live and move and have our being in God, not only are we near to Him, but we coexist with Him.
