MAN'S SPIRITUAL HERITAGE
Christian Science is revealing to mankind the great fact that man is the emanation of God and that as the offspring of Spirit he is spiritual, not material. The correct understanding of our true selfhood is important, because in the measure of our understanding that divine Life is the Life of man we shall not be deceived by false material laws which claim to govern us. To the extent that the Christian Scientist identifies himself as the perfect and eternal son of God, he is immune from material conditions and beliefs and is therefore free from the claims of sickness and sin.
Mary Baker Eddy states in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 63): "In Science man is the offspring of Spirit. The beautiful, good, and pure constitute his ancestry. His origin is not, like that of mortals, in brute instinct, nor does he pass through material conditions prior to reaching intelligence. Spirit is his primitive and ultimate source of being; God is his Father, and Life is the law of his being." This is a statement of loving assurance, and when understood it removes a great fear of mortals by causing them to reject the so-called law of heredity. The understanding that man is not in matter, but that he lives, moves, and has his being in God, Spirit, enables us to prove the spiritual nature of man, God's son, and to claim our rightful heritage of government by God's unerring law.
The Apostle John's statement in I John (3:2), "Beloved, now are we the sons of God," implies that the divine Parent is the only parent. The divine relationship which has always existed between Mind and its idea, when realized, removes the effects of false education, which has wrongly taught mankind that the material law of heredity is real. This false education teaches those uninstructed in Christian Science that sin and sickness can be transmitted from generation to generation. It claims in some instances that disease is inescapable and will eventually come to members of certain families.
