GOD DOES IT

[Of Special Interest to Children]

As long as he could remember, Gerald had loved music. The simple, lively little songs his mother sang and played to him set his feet to marching. Coloring was always more fun when he whistled at the same time. But the greatest treat was to sit by his mother on the piano bench while she played hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal. When Gerald could read they often read and talked about the words of a favorite hymn, "Feed My Sheep" by Mary Baker Eddy (Poems, p. 14).

And whenever they felt the peace and joy which always come from singing this beautiful poem set to music his mother would remind Gerald that music, like love and truth, is a precious gift from God, so it is in reality spiritual and perfect. Then she would show Gerald a few lines from one of Mrs. Eddy's Messages to The Mother Church where she says of music and its source: "Music is divine. Mind, not matter, makes music" (Message for 1900, p. 11).

It was a very important day when Gerald and his mother made a special trip to the music store and bought his first piano lesson book. This would be a new and exciting adventure! Mother showed Gerald how quickly he could read notes and recognize melodies if he always remembered the proverb which speaks of real hearing and sight (20:12): "The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them." As they understood more of these spiritual truths sight reading and car training became great fun, and they were grateful that they could prove man is governed by God's spiritual law in everything they did, including expressing music.
