Signs of the Times

William Wallace Rose in The Christian Leader Boston, Massachusetts

Artists tell us how to look at pictures, and musicians how to listen to music. Let a minister instruct on how to go into the house of the Lord for the better worship of God and the service of man.

In the first place we should he "glad," as the Psalmist puts it, when the call to worship comes. We should go with expectations high, confident that something of supreme importance is to happen there.... Equally essential, we should come in a receptive mood, our minds and emotions open to the influences which prevail in church. Three steps here are to be especially noted. The first is taken in the silent church before the service begins. Here we push from the center of our attention the problems of the past and the portents of the future and give the day and its message a chance to reach us. Until we do this, no good can come from church, however much good is there to be had.
