CHRISTIAN SCIENCE CHURCH ELECTIONS

In Jesus' time the mother of James and John besought the Master, "Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom" (Matt. 20:21). This fond parent was no doubt yielding to a personal desire to see her sons in favored positions. The Master loved the woman and her sons and explained compassionately, "To sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father."

Christian Scientists today can learn a valuable lesson from Jesus' admonishment when it comes to filling church positions. In all Christian Science churches and societies meetings are held annually for the purpose of electing officers to carry on their business, and these meetings provide opportunity for members to demonstrate that each place "shall be given to them for whom it is prepared" of the Father.

Obedience to divine Mind's direction enables members to put aside personal sense and to let God govern. One definition of "election" given in a dictionary is "the sovereign choice of God," which is a perfect definition for church elections.
