CHARACTER AND HEALTH

Those who live in the civilized parts of the world are becoming increasingly acquainted with the fact that the teaching of Christian Science emphasizes the healing of the physically sick. In the lifting up of the diseased the truth of its teaching is being widely demonstrated. But this important point should also be clearly understood: Christian Science is not a healing cult, a system of therapeutics to make men's bodies well and thereby enable them to go along in the same old material way. The fundamental purpose of Christian Science is the spiritual regeneration of human consciousness and the ultimate demonstration that man in his true and only being is now the perfect and complete expression of his creative Principle, God.

Throughout the teaching of this Science one finds an inseparable connection between physical healing and the regeneration of character. The two are absolutely conjoined. Mary Baker Eddy writes in her sermon "The People's Idea of God" (p. 7): "Scientific discovery and the inspiration of Truth have taught me that the health and character of man become more or less perfect as his mind-models are more or less spiritual. Because God is Spirit, our thoughts must spiritualize to approach Him, and our methods grow more spiritual to accord with our thoughts."

Mrs. Eddy took a radical stand when she proclaimed that the only kind of man there really is, is spiritual right now; and she based her statement on the declaration regarding man in the first chapter of Genesis—a perfectly logical conclusion, for in the light of intelligent reasoning can the exact image of God, Spirit, be material, a matter man? Can Spirit create or evolve matter?
