GOOD BUSINESS
Since all right and useful activity is controlled by its divine Principle, God, as Christian Science explains, good business depends upon Spirit, not upon matter. As men understand this fact and change their business methods so that they conform to it their business will be progressive, productive, and prosperous.
"But," some ask, "do not human demand and material supply constitute a law which governs business? Is not good business dependent upon the productivity of the men and women who work in the factories, fields, and offices? Is it not true that success and profit are influenced by luck, weather, and other material conditions?" For centuries many have thought so. But today Christian Science reveals that the law governing all right business is not material, physical, or mortally mental, but wholly spiritual. It declares that genuinely good business reflects the divine Mind and its unlimited ability; reflects Principle and its ceaseless and harmonious operation; reflects Life and its vitality; reflects Truth and its stability; reflects Love and its inspiration and motive power. The Apostle Paul understood the basic law of all growth and success when he wrote (I Cor. 3:6), "I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase."
Consider for a moment a big chain-store system supplying the daily needs of thousands or a great railroad serving hundreds of towns and cities. Just suppose that all elements which originate in and belong to divine Mind were suddenly withdrawn from such a business. Eliminate, for instance, all intelligence, conscience, accuracy, orderliness, dependability, integrity, justice, helpfulness, and kindness. Just what kind of business would be left? Would its customers be satisfied, and would its employees continue to work for such an institution? Would the stockholders ever receive any dividends? Could such a business survive?
