A SCIENTIFIC REMEDY FOR PAIN
God is the only creator, and the primal quality of God is intelligence. There is nothing in God's creation that is unintelligent. Evil claims to be a creator and therefore to be intelligent, but evil is unintelligent and therefore cannot create anything. It has neither life, intelligence, nor substance, and so it is not felt, seen, heard, or manifest in truth. All that is real or true, all that actually lives, feels, sees, hears, acts, is divine intelligence and its expression. God's creation is wholly good and supremely intelligent.
All true intelligence manifests God's presence, Science, and power. Mary Baker Eddy defines "intelligence" in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" as follows (p. 469): "Intelligence is omniscience, omnipresence, and omnipotence. It is the primal and eternal quality of infinite Mind, of the triune Principle,—Life, Truth, and Love.—named God."
The problem of pain and suffering is one that has engaged the attention of thinkers from time immemorial, and many explanations have been advanced to account for it. One commonly accepted theological theory is that pain is sent by God as a punishment for sin and as a goad to greater righteousness. The Scriptures give no authority for such beliefs. The patriarch Moses said of God (Deut. 32:4), "All his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he." The Apostle John declared (I John 4:8), "God is love," and in the book of Revelation he writes thus of God's work and its results (21:4): "God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain."
