THE TESTIMONY OF SPIRITUAL SENSE

Spiritual sense, the ability to be conscious of God, Spirit, of the spiritual universe, and of our spiritual selfhood, is the most wonderful thing we can have. Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, points out that there is in reality no other sense; that man has only the ability to cognize the spiritual. She writes in "Unity of Good" (p. 21), "There is no sensible matter, no sense in matter; but there is a spiritual sense, a sense of Spirit, and this is the only consciousness belonging to true individuality, or a divine sense of being."

Sometimes amid clouds or storm the barometer points to pleasant weather. Spiritual sense always testifies to the sunshine of Truth and to God's love and omnipotent care. Regardless of what error the material senses testify to, it can be refuted and its evidence annulled as we turn to spiritual sense and accept its testimony. Spiritual sense is powerful. Material sense is powerless. What the material senses testify to is not true. What spiritual sense reveals is the fact.

Material sense told a student of Christian Science that her husband and the man who worked for them were ill, that the weather was bad, and that there were acres of corn which had to be picked and shelled by a certain time in order to fulfill a contract. Even with good weather and good health this would have seemed very difficult. She turned away from this evidence of discord and difficulty to the evidence of spiritual sense. She thought of the divine order, of God's ideas, forever expressing perfection, freedom, and health, and the sunshine of Truth and Love. In a few hours both men were well, and the sun was shining. The corn was picked and shelled in time to fulfill the contract.
