Christian Science has been my...

Christian Science has been my only physician for more than twenty-five years. My first benefit from it was the overcoming of a lack of supply after I had been left a widow with two small children. With the help of a dear aunt, who had reared me, I managed to care for them where I was until they reached school age. Then I moved to an eastern city where educational opportunities for them were more favorable. Work for women was not easily obtained, and worry, anxiety, and fear of the future brought about discouragement which seemed more than I could bear.

A friend whom I knew offered me employment two evenings a week. I noticed this friend reading a little black book, which she said was "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. She held the book up and said: "I owe my life to the reading of this book. It healed me of stomach trouble after the doctor had ordered me to the hospital for a surgical operation."

I asked her if by reading that book I could find regular employment. She assuered me that I could and with a serious expression on her face said, "But you cannot play with it; you must be earnest and expectant." I promised that I would read it with that attitude, and she gave me the name of a practitioner who had helped her. I joyfully welcomed the privilege of calling on the practitioner. The result of my call was that in just a short time I was given a permanent position, doing the same line of work as that of my friend. I kept the position until I became a Christian Science nurse years later.
