"LEANING ON THE SUSTAINING INFINITE"

Mankind are often unconsciously prone to make human props of individuals, places, things. Their dependence upon them weighs down that which should uplift when measured aright. Sweet companionship with individuals, and pleasant dwelling places and surroundings which exemplify beauty, when seen in their relationship to spiritual ideas are beneficial and inspirational. But placing our confidence in material things, holding in thought pleasurable matter as reality and depending upon mortal personality for our strength and support, is never a blessing to humanity but a hindrance and a weakener, a detriment to progress.

Mary Baker Eddy declares in the Preface to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." That sustaining infinite is fully capable of holding us up throughout all trials and tribulations, whereas a human prop is apt to let us down, at the same time causing itself to stumble. Let us never be guilty of wholly depending upon some dear one to support our tottering footsteps and thus harm both him and ourselves.

Sooner or later we learn to depend upon God for our welfare and happiness, knowing that He is fully responsible for His own. Moreover, we can safely leave those we call our precious ones in the bosom of His love, knowing well that He careth for them more tenderly than we could even dream of doing.
