RECOGNIZING OUR REAL SELFHOOD

Among the many illuminating illustrations given by Mary Baker Eddy to help the student understand and recognize his true selfhood is the simple comparison of Christian Science to a mirror. She writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, pp. 515, 516): "Your mirrored reflection is your own image or likeness. If you lift a weight, your reflection does this also. If you speak, the lips of this likeness move in accord with yours. Now compare man before the mirror to his divine Principle, God. Call the mirror divine Science, and call man the reflection. Then note how true, according to Christian Science, is the reflection to its original."

With wonderful clarity Christian Science shows God to be Mind, Soul, infinite Spirit, Love, Truth, divine Principle. Man is the manifestation of Life, the reflection of infinite Spirit. The facts of man's inherent perfection constitute the basis from which one experiencing inharmony of any kind argues against sense testimony and gains freedom. It is our right to argue for harmony and against discord, and great numbers of Christian Scientists have found healing and the verdict of "Not guilty" through emphatic rejection of sense testimony and acceptance of the perfection of God and man.

We can speedily discredit the testimony of the corporeal senses through the knowledge that man is not mortal but immortal. Mrs. Eddy writes (ibid., p. 475): "Man is incapable of sin, sickness, and death. The real man cannot depart from holiness, nor can God, by whom man is evolved, engender the capacity or freedom to sin."
