LETTERS TO THE PRESS FROM CHRISTIAN SCIENCE COMMITTEES ON PUBLICATION

Kindly permit me space to clarify a statement in a Senator's "Report to Newton from Beacon Hill," published in a recent issue.

We are sorry for the misunderstanding that the good Senator seems to entertain with regard to the objection which Christian Scientists raise to compulsory physical examination of their children in the schools.

The Senator mentions the fact that some Christian Scientists are still at the point where they do not prove their religion perfectly. He does not mention the fact that their religion requires them to make continual progress in proving it perfectly, and to reach perfect achievement as rapidly as they are able to do so. Under these circumstances, any compulsion exercised by the state to make any Christian Scientist live his religion in a lesser degree than he has proved himself capable of doing constitutes a trespass upon his conscience. For that reason. Christian Scientists object to compulsory physical examination.

Incidentally, the reasonableness and justice of their objection is already recognized by law in many states of the Union.
