In the spring of 1946 I broke my glasses, which I had worn for twelve years for failing eyesight. I had been healed of astigmatism many years before and had laid aside the glasses. When I asked myself why I had reverted to wearing them again, the answer came, "To magnify." Then I thought, As a Christian Scientist what do I magnify? And I realized that I should magnify God, Mind, and that my healing would come by enlarging my thought of Him.

I knew that sight is a quality which God, divine Mind, had given me and that therefore I had it at that moment; and I thanked Him for it. I looked up references to sight, light, gratitude, and joy in the Concordance to the Christian Science Hymnal, and I sang for an hour and a half. I also looked up the references to these words and also the word lens in the Concordances to the writings of Mrs. Eddy, The definition of eyes as spiritual discernment on page 586 of Science and Health was of great help to me. At the end of the day the print was quite clear and distinct. I discarded the glasses and have not worn them since.

As I continued to study I saw that sight means more than being able to read fine print, and through the unfoldment of spiritual discernment several other healings took place. I gained my freedom from a false sense of responsibility to a great extent; estrangement was overcome, and a goiter disappeared.
