Four years ago I experienced a healing in Christian Science of arthritis in a very severe form. The condition came upon me slowly, and I yielded to the suggestion that I could not take the time to work it out in Christian Science. However, it began to assume more aggressive proportions, and finally I was compelled to stay at home. My arm, shoulders, and back became paralyzed; I could not walk, and the suffering was intense.
At first I was so filled with self-pity and resentment that there was no place in my thinking for Truth and Love. My family was disturbed over my condition and tried to help me in Christian Science, but the condition did not yield. Suddenly I became aware of the suffering I was causing them because of the selfishness and apathy I was expressing, and I set to work to overcome this erroneous thinking. The following sentence from page 192 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, came to me as though spoken by a voice: "Whatever holds human thought in line with unselfed love, receives directly the divine power." Immediately I began to declare the truth vehemently: "God is All, and there is none else. God alone is present, and I am His reflection."
I insisted on the fact that this phase of belief was not real, not true, but illusion, a lie. Soon, on one particular evening, I was able to assure my family that there was no need for their unhappiness, as I was again free. Then I went to sleep. When I awoke the next morning, I was refreshed and completely healed. The day following I returned to business. There has never been a return of the disease.
