A Superintendent's Experience
[This contribution comes from the superintendent of a branch church Sunday School]
To fulfill effectively the sacred office of Sunday School superintendent is surely the prayer of everyone who is called to this joyous work. This was my own state of thought when asked to take office. Praying in deep communion with the Father, who reveals the way, I saw more and more clearly the specific function of this office. I saw our Sunday School as the provision of the Church of Christ, Scientist, for the true education of the youth of the world and recognized not only that metaphysical work must be done in behalf of the Sunday School of the particular branch church of which I was a member, but that it must be universal.
In my specific work for the local Sunday School it became clear to me that as superintendent I must ever rejoice in the perfect alignment of all in the one harmonious plan of the Father-Mother. So I became acquainted with parents, teachers, office workers, librarians, and the children themselves. And as I continue to do this, I find it an important part of my work. The result is joyous co-operation on the part of all concerned.
A truly loving welcome greets every child and parent. Parents continually express appreciation and often comment on the atmosphere of love, joy, and kindness which pervades the Sunday School. Children are happy and contented. Teachers are devoted. And the thought that some teachers have entertained of being suited to teach only a particular age group has practically gone. Often a teacher will spontaneously take a class for which she has not made special preparation, deeming it a privilege to prove her readiness to serve wherever needed. Teachers are in their places well before the children arrive and are waiting in a prayerful attitude to receive them.
