It is a commonplace that our main problem at the moment is to find a way of living together. Whether we think of the family, or the nation, or the world, our desperate need is a basis of agreement through which personal and national antagonisms can be overcome. But there is a more intimate problem and one equally pressing. It is how to live with ourselves. There is small chance of living at peace with the world without while a kind of civil war is going on within. Sometimes we are conscious that we are our own worst enemy....

The only cure for the habit of running away from ourselves is to find a self from which we do not want to run away. The secret is in words that were spoken to Job, however irrelevant they were to his condition. "Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace." Some might reply that God is outside the range of their experience. They have no contact with Him and do not know how to find Him. But the truth is that we are all in touch with God.... His light kindles the lamp of conscience by which we see ourselves. His presence makes us aware of the emptiness of life without Him. It is His knock on the doorway of the heart that sends the echoes of frustration and futility sounding through our souls....
