When I came to Ceylon many years ago, I brought with me as parting gifts from my parents a Bible and a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I loved both these books and had seen in my own home ample proof of the healing power of Christian Science; but filled with curiosity and enthusiasm for new discoveries among the ancient philosophies of the Orient, I allowed myself to be deluded for a time with the belief that the same truth was discoverable in all philosophies and that the particular label of a religion was immaterial.

Some years passed, and I fell seriously ill with typhoid fever. After I had spent many weeks in hospital, all hopes for my recovery were abandoned. While I lay unconscious, word of my condition was sent to my sister in England, who immediately telephoned a Christian Science practitioner and requested absent treatment. Friends in Ceylon had been advised that my passing was imminent, but to everyone's intense surprise my temperature fell to normal, and I requested food. Complete recovery was swift and was a nine-day wonder in Colombo.

That was a true Christian Science healing, for with the fever many undesirable traits departed, as well as extreme nervousness. For instance, I did not think I could drive my own car, but after my recovery I learned to drive in three lessons. Now my whole desire was to learn more of this saving Science, and I soon found with joy that a Christian Science Society had been established in Colombo. I shall never forget the first service I attended or the happiness I found in making friends with the members. In all my years here I had never known such loving-kindness and understanding.
