In the year 1929 my husband and...
In the year 1929 my husband and I came to Cleveland to live. At that time I was a registered medical nurse and was very ill and unhappy. I had severe stomach trouble, from which I had suffered since childhood. I had been under the care of a stomach specialist, but received no relief. Four months after our arrival I became friendly with a neighbor. I soon confided in her and told her of my illness and unhappiness. She asked me if I would care to try Christian Science. I replied that I had heard the name mentioned, but that I knew nothing of this religion. She then told me of her healing of cancer. I said, "Well, if Christian Science heals cancer, it will heal me."
I went to see a Christian Science practitioner, and he explained to me that God is Love, Life, and Truth and that man is created in His image and likeness. He gave me a Christian Science treatment and some citations to study from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. One of these citations in particular seemed to stay in my thought. It is found on page 151 and reads, "Every function of the real man is governed by the divine Mind." I also tried to hold in consciousness, as the practitioner had asked me to do, the fact that God is omnipotent, omnipresent, and infinite.
The next day I was able to take care of my household duties, and suddenly I was aware that the burning and pains in my stomach had entirely disappeared; I knew it was the result of the practitioner's work. When I went back to see him again, he explained the importance of daily study of the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly. The difficulty entirely disappeared, and there has been no return of it. I shall be everlastingly grateful to the friend who introduced me to this blessed truth—Christian Science—also to the practitioner. The Lesson-Sermons have meant a great deal to me in working out my daily problems. On awakening in the morning I first of all read the Lesson. The healing truths contained therein not only protect me but also bring me peace.
