"REVERSE THE CASE"

[Of Special Interest to Young People]

Must we make material health laws a part of our thinking? Are we obliged to accept disease as real because newspapers, radio, and billboards so widely publicize it to be so, and because it is so taught in many of our schools? Are man-made rules, regulations, and warnings the true guide to perfection? Even though we seem to be beset by descriptions of and discussions about disease, and schools require that certain courses, such as material hygiene (health laws) and biology be taught, we are assured by Christian Science that so-called laws of health are in direct contrast to the law of God.

The first chapter of Genesis in the Bible makes it very clear that man is made in the image and likeness of God. And our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, in her "scientific statement of being" in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," declares (p. 468): "Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual."

To ruminate on and study about what man is not would be as ridiculous as for a bank teller to study all kinds of counterfeit money in order to recognize the authentic. He needs to be so familiar with the genuine that he can readily detect the counterfeit. Similarly, our need is to learn about the real spiritual man, our real self, so that anything imaged forth that varies in any way from perfection is quickly seen as a spurious claim to be reversed and destroyed.
