"THE BEAUTY OF THY PEACE"

The longing for peace lies deep in the hearts of all mankind today, Yet no matter how earnestly tired humanity desires it, there seem to be some who doubt its possibility even in any remote time in the future. They say that things have gone too far, that the world situation is such that harmony and mutual understanding between men and nations are only some vague Utopian dream, hidden in the mists of remoteness, too good to be true.

Christian Science, however, will not admit that. It says not only that nothing is too good to be true, but that many things are too bad to be true, and this feeling of hopelessness is one of them. It teaches that in God's sight there is no dim and distant Utopia greatly to be desired but impossible of attainment, but that all good is here now, and instantly available. It teaches us not to judge after the sight of the eyes and the hearing of the ears. It refuses to believe that a voice over the radio in the early morning hours with its disconcerting predictions of evil can have power to darken one's entire day. When did God cease to be omnipotent? "Can Deity be almighty, if another mighty and self-creative cause exists and sways mankind?" asks Mary Baker Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 357).

This is no time for idle talk, nor for listening to wrong things. There are times when those engaged in Alpine climbing are told not to talk as they climb. We are all climbing to reach spiritual heights in order to do our part in healing the world situation, and we must keep on climbing if we would not slip back into the dark valley of despair. The prophet Amos understood this when he wrote centuries ago to the people of his age, referring to the crucial days which were to come (5:13), "The prudent shall keep silence in that time; for it is an evil time."
