REFLECTION
The
storm was over and the rains had ceased;
Dark, lowering clouds had risen to disperse,
And I walked out into the sweet, cool air
Lost in deep thought, and unaware
Of nature's beauty round the countryside.
The heavy farm carts passing through the lane
Had left deep, muddy ruts.
And the rain
Had found within those ruts a resting place.
Here, as I pondered, looking down,
A sudden glory met my eyes—
Tall rain-washed elms in clear relief
Against the wondrous blue of cloudless skies.
The shallow pool of standing water there,
So still, so unadorned, so commonplace,
Mirrored the glory of the heavens above
And swiftly reawakened thoughts of love.
So may I too, in deep humility,
Stay still, reflecting Love's infinity.
