The Christian Science textbook...

The Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, came into my home at a time when I was in great mental distress. It was not given to me, but to a member of m family who did not want it; but I needed it, and when I read the opening sentence of the first chapter, on Prayer, I saw the wonder and beauty of it, and never let the textbook go. The sentence reads, "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love."

I had been in the habit of taking a lot of medicine, which seemed to be necessary, but that habit soon left me. Later on, while I was living in London for two years, I was still very unhappy. I went to a Christian Science practitioner for help, and she quoted to me from the book of Joel (2:25, 26): "I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten. ... And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you."

Although any thought of satisfaction or happiness seemed quite impossible at that time, I was much comforted and began to improve. At that time, too, I was suffering from arthritis in one arm and could not lift it. This condition was healed quickly and permanently through help from the same practitioner. The true sense of happiness was restored through my study of Christian Science, and this study has also proved to me that Science is indeed the Comforter promised by the Master.
