THE CHRISTIAN SLAVE

I am a slave. My Roman master can
Without restraint do with me as he will.
Beneath the Roman law my rights are nil.
A slave like me is held as less than man.

But I have found a royal way of life,
Wherein are joy and tender love and peace.
For God is Love, and Love can never cease.
This truth dissolves all pain and fear and strife.

In God each man is perfect, whole and free,
His tender truth is still our strength and shield.
Though to its threat the many millions yield,
There is no power or life in tyranny.

Since I have walked the pathway which is real,
Have learned to love, to see in all I meet
The perfect child of God, my life is sweet
With childlike trust. What happiness I feel!

I pray and know that always through the years.
Whenever man shall turn to God with trust
And with a love for all. he shall and must
Soon find the truth which wipes away all tears.
