TRUE SECURITY

Today , when the great cry among men and nations is for security, it is well to give serious consideration to the question, "What is security, and where is it to be found?" Security is the assurance of safety or certainty of freedom from anxiety and destruction. Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 232), "Security for the claims of harmonious and eternal being is found only in divine Science." Security, then, is to be found in an understanding of Christian Science, which teaches man's true relationship to God. And just what is this true relationship, and where is it to be found? It is the oneness of God and man, of Principle and idea. True security, when sought in Principle, is always available and is established for all time. Mankind has a right to security, but only as a corollary to seeking first a right understanding of God, for that is one of the added things which Christ Jesus promised to those who sought first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.

As we take up the study of Christian Science, we learn first that God is not a corporeal being: He is Spirit, omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient. Neither is the real man a corporeal being, depending upon matter for life and activity. Man, we learn, is the spiritual image and likeness of God, Spirit. He is perfect because his source, or origin, is perfect. Even a very meager realization of the true nature of God and His spiritual idea, man, begins at once to dispel fear and sets one on the road to the realization of the true sense of security.

But when the thought of the people is filled with the beliefs of danger, lack, fear, discouragement, or other evils, these are likely to be manifested in their human experience. It is therefore imperative that all such false thoughts be eliminated from consciousness and be replaced with thoughts of confidence instead of fear, of assurance instead of doubt, of abundance instead of lack, of strength instead of weakness, of love instead of hate. Mrs. Eddy writes (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 210): "Beloved Christian Scientists, keep your minds so filled with Truth and Love, that sin, disease, and death cannot enter them. It is plain that nothing can be added to the mind already full. There is no door through which evil can enter, and no space for evil to fill in a mind filled with goodness." And she continues, "Good thoughts are an impervious armor; clad therewith you are completely shielded from the attacks of error of every sort. And not only yourselves are safe, but all whom your thoughts rest upon are thereby benefited."
