OUR EXPERIENCES REFLECT OUR THOUGHTS
The need of protecting thought from whatever would tend to confuse it is obvious and is one of the fundamental teachings of Christian Science. The deeper scientific reason for this, however, may not be so readily understood. One significant citation from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, which clearly sets forth this reason, is (p. 86): "Mortal mind sees what it believes as certainly as it believes what it sees. It feels, hears, and sees its own thoughts." Here is a most profound truth, which is destined to transform the lives of those who fully grasp its meaning and act in accordance therewith.
The writer recently had a simple but very illuminating experience which gave him a greater appreciation of this passage. For some days he had been working steadily to overcome an aggressive sense of fear and doubt which sometimes presents itself to the student of Christian Science and which only impels him to prove a higher courage and fidelity. He soon began to feel the new strength, confidence, and understanding which result from unceasing prayer. Complete freedom and harmony soon appeared.
It was just at this time that the writer read the above-quoted passage from Science and Health, and he thought: "This is equally true when we entertain spiritual thoughts. Because I have been affirming only absolute spiritual facts for several days, these truths are now bearing fruit as my present harmonious sense of being." Not long thereafter he found himself absorbed in the pages of an interesting pictorial magazine. After he had been reading for but a short time he suddenly thought, "Am I getting from the pages of this magazine the kind of thoughts which I want to feel, hear, and see—which I want to constitute my experience?"
