The last depression found me...

The last depression found me with no job, no home, and a stark realization that my earnings of half a century of hard work were wiped out. I was grateful, however, for my good health.

I was led to the study of Christian Science through a remark made by a friend, a Scientist who knew I had been brought up with a love for religion. He said: "You've tried your way of living, and you admit you've failed. Wouldn't it be wisdom to let God handle you His way?" Then he presented to me these wonderful verses from Proverbs (3:5, 6): "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." While I was attending my first Wednesday evening testimony meeting, I realized that if I could have the faith and joy which these enthusiastic people were manifesting, perhaps a rightful sense of dominion could be gained.

I had come to the United States from England just before the First World War and had established myself in the East. Soon after my interest in Christian Science was awakened I received an invitation to go West. I accepted it as the result of my adherence to the above Scriptural verses, which were constantly in my thought. I reasoned I was better equipped to teach singing or tennis than to do anything else, and the thought came that work in either of these fields would be acceptable. But I was willing to leave it entirely in God's hands and tried to listen for His guidance and do His will.
