"AS SINGS THE MOUNTAIN STREAM"

Nothing is sought after with greater persistence by all people than health. To the Christian Scientist, health is not a condition of matter, but a state of divine Mind, which is reflected by individual consciousness. However, all do not have the same idea as to what constitutes health, nor are all pursuing the same methods in obtaining and retaining it. Christian Science includes in its healing work the necessity of praising God, of singing and rejoicing.

In fact, Mary Baker Eddy uses a portion of the forty-second Psalm to head the chapter entitled "Christian Science Practice" in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." And in previous chapter she writes (p. 234), "Whatever inspires with wisdom, Truth, or Love —be it song, sermon, or Science— blesses the human family with crumbs of comfort from Christ's table, feeding the hungry and giving living waters to the thirsty."

Christian Science teaches that because God, Spirit, is All and His creation, including man, is spiritual, matter, Spirit's opposite, is illusion, or nothingness. Therefore if disease or a lack of harmony is expressed, the Christian Scientist's method of treating it is to seek release from the error of thought which for the moment is blurring the vision of the perfect, sinless, diseaseless creation of God. Rejoicing, praising God, and singing help to dispel the errors of thought and break the seeming mesmerism of matter until a consciousness of harmony is gained and expressed outwardly.
