DOUBT DISSOLVED

"Three in One"—the mystic sign:
"Father, Son, and Holy Ghost."
And many a fervent Christian has despaired.

Not by stained window,
Emerald, amber, garnet, sapphire,
Jeweling the aisle;
Not by the muted notes
Of the voluntary, freeing itself
And crowding to a crescendo,
To rich and overwhelming tide of sound;
Not by soft rhythm of the prayer repeated—
Not by any of these
Was the mystery made clear.

Not by any of these
Did the centuries give the people
The three in One
The Master understood.

Courage of one scribe
Writing under orders,
Demanding logic of the Christ,
Got the answer.

Questioning was justified,
Trinity clarified.
Life, Truth, Love satisfied
The searching mind.
And thanks be given to God.
