UNFOLDING VIEWS
In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 241): "One's aim, a point beyond faith, should be to find the footsteps of Truth, the way to health and holiness. We should strive to reach the Horeb height where God is revealed." After hearing this statement read at a Wednesday evening testimony meeting, a student of Christian Science was vividly reminded of an experience which had helped to make this particular passage clearer to her.
One Sunday morning she wished to attend the church services in a small town near San Francisco where she had lived as a child and had for many years attended the Christian Science Sunday school. Arriving too early for church, she decided to climb a near by hill where she used to live. At first she was uncertain as to the right path, but as she went on she found herself on the right trail. At first the path was steep and overhung by the dense foliage of the trees, but she climbed on until she came to an open space from which she caught a glimpse of the sunlit bay. As she continued her climb, these open spaces were more frequent, and each time she was able to see more of the scene below. At last she reached a clear and level place, and as she walked slowly along, more and more of the vista was unfolded, until at last the entire bay spread out below her, beautiful, calm, and peaceful, with the sunlight glinting off the towers of the Golden Gate Bridge. As she stood there rejoicing, she realized that she had been given a waymark to point out the meaning of the heavenward path, which leads ever upward to the full and complete realization of God and man's oneness with Him as His idea.
Christian Science is to countless thousands the path, or way, that enables them to find their own spiritual unity with God. At first self-love, self-will, material pleasures, or other lies of mortal mind may seem to lead us by false paths, but as we hold firmly to the understanding we have already gained of the true nature of God revealed by Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health, we are guided rightly and find the way to further knowledge and unfolding usefulness.
